Questions about Blackjack (21)?

Die V. asked:
Im going to Vegas this weekend and my game of choice is Blackjack. I dont know all the ins and outs of the game, just the basics. I dont get the whole concept about doubling down or splitting. Can someone explain this to me a little better or tell me when is the best time to double down or to split??

Answer

Sure, I’d be happy to explain doubling down and splitting in blackjack.

Doubling down is when you double your initial bet after you’ve received your first two cards. In exchange for doubling your bet, you’re dealt one additional card and then you’re forced to stand. Doubling down is best when you have a hand that’s likely to win, such as when you have a total of 10 or 11 and the dealer has a weak upcard, like a 6 or lower. Doubling down allows you to potentially win double your initial bet, but it can also be risky, so it’s important to use it judiciously.

Splitting is when you take a pair of cards of the same rank, such as two 7s, and split them into two separate hands. You’re then dealt a second card for each of the new hands and you’re free to play each hand as you would normally. Splitting is best when you have a pair of 8s or Aces, as these are the hands most likely to benefit from being split. Splitting can give you the opportunity to turn one losing hand into two winning hands, but it can also be risky if you don’t know what you’re doing.
